The Media Center Showdown Part 5

Part 5 of the media center showdown I'll be covering the units price. First off the Apple TV: 

The price

Apple TV

The price on Apple TV is about $99.99 or 890SEK. It's a really good price I must say and it'll really be worth it once you jailbreak the Apple TV. The device will really shine once you will be able to use all the feature it was meant to be used. I've heard rumours that a new Apple TV is soon to be released and that's why Apple is dropping the price worldwide.

WD TV Live

The WD TV Live costs $79.99 or 900SEK. With this price you need to have in mind that if you want to use the device wireless you'll need to buy a WIFI adapter which cost about $20 or 200SEK. So it'll cost you about the same as an Apple TV. You wont get cool new features and apps, instead you will get a genuine media center that mostly is used to play your media locally. In my opinion the WD TV Live is too expensive.

D-Link Boxee

You will get a Boxee for $179.99 or 1449SEK. The D-Link is a very powerful and competent machine that will offer you a lot. However, I think the price is quite high. Don't get me wrong I think it's worth every penny I spent on it but maybe you should look at a cheaper alternative if you're having a tight budget. The Boxee price is actually dropping, especially now that the unit has been merged with Iomega. It might get cheaper in the future.

Conclusion

The Apple TV wins this round. It's quite unusual that an Apple product would considered cheap, but considering what I mentioned earlier, we are looking at a new Apple TV this spring so maybe the price drop isn't such a big surprise really.

WD TV Live has seen it's best days and is coming to it's end. I'm surprised that the price isn't lower considering that there are 2 new WD devices out on the market. 

I think the D-Link Boxee is loosing customers because of it's price. I know some friends of mine who choose the Apple TV instead of the Boxee just beacuse of the low price, so D-Link ought to knock a few dollars off.
