Review : Dell Streak 5" (Android tablet/phone)

The Dell Streak 5 is a ........ umm..... well... something between a tablet and a mobile phone. The reason I bought it was that I wanted a tablet that wasn't to large like the Ipad and I didn't want to carry around two devices for surfing and phone calls. My first thought was to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab. But with it's 7" large screen it was way to big. I then found the Dell Streak which was perfect for my needs.

The good

The screen. With it's 5" it's just a joy to watch. Bright and sharp.

16 GB SD card are included which is great compared to the 2 GB you get from the Xperia. You can expand the memory up to 32 GB.

The size. It is big compared to a phone but it is compact compared to a tablet. It has a very thin construction, which is good.

The construction. It feels great when your holding it. It's quite heavy and steady but in a good way.

The speaker. It's located at the back of the phone under the battery cover and it sounds great. Loud and great details. You won't miss any calls with the volume on this device.

The battery. Considering that it has such a big screen the battery life is good. Surprisingly good. It will last you with moderate use up to 2 days without charging.

The price. I was really surprised that it was so cheap.

The bad

Sluggish. It isn't the fasted device out there. It gets a bit laggy when you scroll thru menues sometimes. If you pinch to zoom when surfing the web it lags to. I downloaded Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 and played a few matches and from time to time it studdered. This did suprise me a lot because if you look at the specs you get a feeling that it would run smoothly.

The size. From a phone device point of view it is to big. It really tricky using the phone with one hand. Don't even try dialing your buddy when driving, it even gets hard answering a call with one hand.

Android 2.2. I actually got my Streak with Android 1.6. I upgraded it and it worked a bit better. The sad thing is that it looks like Dell won't be releasing any more updates. The 2.2 firmware has quite a lot of bugs.

The 5 megapixels Camera. Might be something wrong with my Streak but it radomly processes photos with some green filter (See photo below). Ok this usually happends in a darker environment but I never had a phone taking such odd pictures before.

The power chord. Samsung has choosen to make their own cable when almost every phone out there is using micro usb cable. That means that you will need to carry your charger with you always.

The sound. Whether you play mp3s locally or using apps like Grooveshark or Spotify the volume is waaaaay to low. I downloaded the app Poweramp just to get some more juice out of it but all I got was loud distortion.

Conclusion

Sadly the Streak did not meet my expectation. It runs to slow. After a while I used it more as a phone than a surf pad beacause I just disliked the experience whit all the lag and poor performance. After a while it got tired of the Streak as a phone device as well. It really is to big as I mentioned before. When I think of a tablet it should respond well with the action you make on the screen like on an iPad, The Streak simply doesn't do that.

I have however found a way to put the Streak in good use. I bought and downloaded Navigon Gps app. It works great as a GPS navigator with it's big screen.

Score 6 out of 10
